The city's history has begun with the discovery of coal in Ereğli region during the Ottoman Empire Sultan Mahmud II's reign. With the correspondence between Istanbul and Vienna embassy, the first miners were the Austrians and the production started around September 1835.
Zonduldak and environs had lived Hittite, Frig, Persia, Roman, Byzantium, Seljukian, Danişmend, Candaroğulları and Ottoman periods. Zonguldak city center is started to settle in 1849 as a settlement place as a result of founding the mining coal.
Later on private and state mining enterprises employed workers drawn from the Mediterranean world and after 1865, the region was called as Zonguldak. With the independence victory of Turkish Republic, Zonguldak offically became a city on April 1st, 1924.
